When I arrived at the local vet clinic I was taken straight to the back where I met the veterinarian and three registered vet technicians. They introduced themselves and gave me a quick tour of the clinic. In one of the exam rooms, I saw that there were three dogs in their kennels being prepared for surgery and one small black dog that was entering the surgery room. I asked what kind of surgery was being performed and Marisol, one of the registered vet techs, said that all the dogs were going to be neutered. They continued working while I watched what they did on a regular basis. After only being there for twenty minutes I knew I was going to have fun. At first, there weren’t many patients coming in but then a man brought in his litter of kittens. They were so cute and tiny! They were there for a quick check up and I was able to hold one while the vet tech checked his temperature and weight. Lucky the four kittens were happy, healthy and ready to leave the clinic. As they left a couple brought in their boxer who has been having seizures for years and had recently had one. They were sent to exam room where I listen to the dog’s medical history and listen to the directions the vet gave the owners for the new medication they had given the dog. After about 2 hours, all four dogs that were in the kennels were neutered and a bit drowsy from the anesthesia. I was able to comfort the dogs crying and pet them to make them comfortable. Later on in the day, many people started coming in and one of the vet techs told me to get ready because it was the busiest time of the day. After seeing many sick cats and dogs I thought I had seen almost everything but that changed when I saw the next patient. Bailey, a white bit bull, came in with some very concerned owners. When I saw Bailey she was covered in scabs, open wounds, scars and missing patches of hair. The poor dog still seemed happy but needed help right away. When the vet was examining her, I learned that white bit bulls are more prone to skin cancer because their fur is white and aren’t completely covered like other dogs. The vet was not completely sure if this was the case but did give her antibiotics to cure the infected wounds she had. Luckily there wasn’t anything too severe so she was able to go home but she would have to be on special medications for a while. Finally, I interviewed Marisol and asked if she liked her job. She responded by saying she really did and that she was glad she chose this career. She said the best part about it was that she could help sick or injured animals and watch them leave the clinic healthy and alive. After my stay, I realized that this is something i really do like very much but i might just pursue something else in the medical field.
